Fly-tipping Action Wales

In Wales, Fly-tipping Action Wales is the Wales-wide partnership initiative sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government and co-ordinated by Environment Agency Wales to tackle fly-tipping. The aim of the initiative is to bring a host of partners together through Fly-tipping Forums to tackle fly-tipping in a holistic way through enforcement, community and educational actions. The initiative deals with the whole spectrum of fly-tipping from the single black bag to the big, bad and nasty.

The five work themes are:

  1. Make it harder for people to fly tip
  2. Increase the risk of getting caught and punished for fly-tipping
  3. Reduce the financial incentive to fly-tip
  4. Make it easier for people to reduce, reuse, recycle and dispose of waste
  5. Legally and remove the excuses used by fly tippers

We have made significant progress on our understanding of why and where fly-tipping occurs partly through the Flycapture database but also through Fly-tipping Action Wales commissioned research by Cardiff University. This enables us to identify effective means for tackling crime and focussing our resources on the activities that have the greatest impact on the environment and on legitimate business.

Environment Agency Wales are always keen to share best practice and research, and learn from other organisations. www.flytippingactionwales.org
