Water UK represents all UK water and wastewater service suppliers at national and European level. We provide a positive framework for the water industry to engage with government, regulators, stakeholder organisations and the public.
There are 10 water and wastewater service provider companies. These are Anglian Water, Dwr Cymru, Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent Water, Southern Water, South West Water, Thames Water, United Utilities, Wessex Water and Yorkshire Water. There another twelve members who provide water only services.
Combined the Water UK members owe vast and significant areas of land and sewerage networks (354,000km nearly the distance to the moon from earth), important in the collection of potable raw waters and collection of polluting wastewaters.
Water UK are funded by our members to influence public policy and opinion to ensure a strong water industry in the interests of all stakeholders.
The focus on policy means: identifying gaps or inadequacies; working with members and stakeholders to develop alternatives; and helping deliver the benefits as new approaches are implemented.
Our core objective is sustainable water policy – actions and solutions that create lasting benefit by integrating economic, environmental and social objectives.
We set up focus groups where a specific issue needs addressing and the involvement of members is essential to make policy recommendations and achieve the required outcomes. We also operate members' networks for those who share an interest and expertise in a particular subject or field of work.
Communication is an essential part of our work. We maintain working relationships with key stakeholders – regulators, government departments, consumer bodies and environmental organisations. We also communicate more widely with national print and broadcast media and business publications. Supporting this are one-off publications and consultations, policy positions and statements published on the Water UK web site www.water.org.uk
